Saturday, October 25, 2 pm
Before World War I, numerous nations sent expeditions to Antarctica, threatening to carve it up as had happened to South Asia and Africa. But when Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 expedition nearly ended in catastrophe, a hiatus existed on the ground until after World War II. Subsequently, scientists began to arrive in mass from many nations. Diane Belanger will discuss her research on the scientific explorations of the 1950’s. Come learn how it affects us all in the present day.

One Maryland One Book 2014 -- The Distance Between Us: A Memoir by Reyna Grande

Reyna Grande author of The Distance Between UsThe Distance Between Us book cover
In its seventh year, One Maryland One Book is designed to bring together diverse people in communities across the state of Maryland through the shared experience of reading the same book. The 2014 theme is The American Dream. Heartbreaking and lyrical, this year’s One Maryland One Book selection, The Distance Between Us, is a poignant memoir of life before and after entering the U.S. from Mexico as an undocumented immigrant. Reyna Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this "compelling....unvarnished, resonant" story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries. Grande reminds us that the joys and sorrows we experienced in childhood are imprinted on the heart forever. They call out to us of those places we first called home. Reyna Grande is the recipient of a American Book Award, the EL Primeo Aztián Literary Award, the Latino Book Award, and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Awards.
