Health Literacy Month: Hoopla Movie Event -- Forks Over Knives

Forks Over Knives DVD coverGlenarden Branch
Thursday, October 2, 4 pm

Forks Over Knives traces the journeys of a nutritional biochemist and a former top surgeon who conducted several groundbreaking studies. Research led them to the same conclusion: degenerative diseases like heart disease, type-2 diabetes, and several forms of cancer could be prevented or reversed by eating a whole-foods, plant-based diet. The idea of food as medicine is put to the test. Cameras follow "reality patients" who have chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. Doctors teach these patients how to adopt a healthy diet, while the challenges and triumphs of their journeys are revealed. One Maryland One Book 2014 -- The Distance Between Us: A Memoir by Reyna Grande

Reyna Grande author of The Distance Between UsThe Distance Between Us book cover

In its seventh year, One Maryland One Book is designed to bring together diverse people in communities across the state of Maryland through the shared experience of reading the same book. The 2014 theme is The American Dream. Heartbreaking and lyrical, this year’s One Maryland One Book selection, The Distance Between Us, is a poignant memoir of life before and after entering the U.S. from Mexico as an undocumented immigrant. Reyna Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this "compelling....unvarnished, resonant" story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries. Grande reminds us that the joys and sorrows we experienced in childhood are imprinted on the heart forever. They call out to us of those places we first called home. Reyna Grande is the recipient of a American Book Award, the EL Primeo Aztián Literary Award, the Latino Book Award, and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Awards.
