 Interim Co-CEOs Message

We are delighted that our Laurel Branch Library was one of only six libraries to win this year’s AIA/ALA Library Building Awards for excellence in architectural design. These awards recognize entire library structures in all aspects of their design. Our Laurel Branch was designed by Grimm + Parker architects. The Laurel Library is the only library in the state of Maryland to receive this award in the past 43 years.

Imaginative uses of the building’s

32,000 square feet of interior space include a replica paleontological dig site in the floor of the children’s area, dinosaur seating, public art pieces by local artists, a cafe with vending machines and study, meeting and conference rooms.

The building’s self-explanatory layout and logical flow patterns, reduces the need for signage. "The library has today and tomorrow in mind with its design and flexibility and provides the modern library user with all the experiences necessary to make a great library visit," a juror reflected.

Capturing the history of this Laurel community with deep African American roots, the textured stone, dynamic lines and bold forms were incorporated into the design. The landscape of the library’s grounds showcases cherry trees, oak trees and drought-resistant plants. The Laurel Branch Library boast of many "green" features: roof mounted solar panels, electric car charging stations, stormwater management, filtered water fountains, energy efficient lighting and a living plant wall. Digital Accessibility

 @ Your Library!

Digital Services Manager Maddie Clybourn and Web Developer Vlad Udachin presented at the Computer in Libraries 2018 conference workshop: Designing Innovative, Accessible, & Elegant Web Spaces, along with Rachael Montgomery, Director and Founder of Accessible Community.

Our Digital Services team provided insights into making the PGCMLS website American Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant. Udachin discussed the complexities of using the present day coding languages within the framework of our Communico for libraries content management system. Clybourn addressed the user-friendly and design aspects of our website with the upgrades. She also shared her 360-degree images embedding project designed to increase digital mobility of individual branch landing pages. Click here to learn more about accessibility at PGCMLS.

Montgomery elaborated on the use of technology to overcome physical access issues. Her presentation included accessibility considerations for library catalogs, kiosk and websites.
