Folklife and Faraway Places Film Series - "Silkwood" Thursday, March 5, 2015 - 1:00pm

"SILKWOOD"  (*R, 128 minutes) Film Viewing and Discussion

Directed by Mike Nichols, "Silkwood" was inspired by the life of labor activist Karen Silkwood (Meryl Streep).  When her fellow employees at the Kerr-McGee plutonium plant are exposed to radiation, Silkwood begins to investigate the company.

On the night that she died in a suspicious car accident in 1974, Silkwood was on her way to meet with a New York Times reporter to share evidence she had uncovered.  Kerr-McGee was later forced to pay Silkwood's family a large settlement because of her contamination, but the full story of what happened that night has never been fully exposed.

In addition to being one of the first screenplays written by Nora Ephron, the film also includes performances by Kurt Russell, Cher and Diana Scarwid.

An *R Rating indicates that viewers under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Folklife and Faraway Places Film Series - "Annie Hall" Thursday, April 2, 2015 - 1:00pm

"Annie Hall"  (PG, 94 minutes) Film Viewing and Discussion

Woody Allen's romantic comedy of the Me Decade follows the up and down relationship of two mismatched New York neurotics.  Jewish comedy writer Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) ponders the modern quest for love and his past romance with tightly-wound WASP singer Annie Hall (Diane Keaton).

Along the rocky road of their coupling, Alvy and Annie tackle such topics as psychoanalysis, drugs, dating rituals and, in one of the best set pieces, repressed Midwestern values vs. Brooklyn Jewish culture.

The film has long been a favorite of academics, who have studied the way it portrays the stereotypes of gender differences in sexuality, the presentation of Jewish identity, and the elements of psychoanalysis and modernism.  "Annie Hall" also won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

"The Secret of Magic" by Deborah Johnson

In a novel that “brings authentic history to light,”* a young female attorney from New York City attempts the impossible in 1946: attaining justice for a black man in the Deep South.

Young attorney Regina Robichard, who works for Thurgood Marshall, receives an unusual letter asking the NAACP to investigate the murder of a returning black war hero. Regina heads down to Mississippi to investigate the case, and attempt the impossible in 1946: attaining justice for a black man in the deep South. As she navigates the muddy waters of racism, relationships, and her own tragic past, she finds that nothing in the South is as it seems.
