Hoopla Movie Event: Health Literacy Month Thursday, October 2, 2014 - 4:00pm

Cover of Forks and KnivesFilm Showing: Forks Over Knives

“Forks Over Knives” traces the journeys of a nutritional biochemist and a former top surgeon who conducted several groundbreaking studies. Research led them to the same conclusion: degenerative diseases like heart disease, type-2 diabetes, and several forms of cancer could be prevented or reversed by adopting a whole-foods, plant-based diet. The idea of food as medicine is put to the test. Cameras follow "reality patients" who have chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. Doctors teach these patients how to adopt a healthy diet, while the challenges and triumphs of their journeys are revealed.

Length: 96 minutes; Director: Lee Fulkerson

Adult Book Discussion - The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Tuesday, October 28, 2014 - 6:30pm

Book Discussion:

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and  more. Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and  faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.
