Bloody Sunday and the Selma Marches Saturday, March 7, 2015 - 2:00pm

50 Years ago, March 7, 1965, peaceful demonstrators gathered in Selma, Alabama, to march to the state capital in Montgomery, Alabama.  Having crossed the Pettus Bridge in Selma, they were attacked by state and local police, many of whom were mounted, and  armed with billy  clubs and tear gas.  Television covered the attack as the demonstrators were severely beaten and dispersed.  A second march was aborted two days later, though without violence.  A third and successful march was carried out two weeks later on March 21.  But March 7 would forever be known as Bloody Sunday.  Join us as Professor Bonner, of the University of Maryland, discusses the significance of the marches and Bloody Sunday.  Both adults and teens are welcome to attend.

Book Discussion:
Widow's Tears by Susan Wittig Albert

Summary: Herbalist and ex-lawyer China Bayles is "in a class with lady sleuths V. I. Warshawski and Stephanie Plum" ( Publishers Weekly ). In Widow's Tears , a haunted house may hold the key to solving the murder of one of China's friends... After losing her family and home in the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, Rachel Blackwood rebuilt her house a hundred miles inland and later died there, still wrapped in her grief. In present-day Texas, Claire, the grandniece of Rachel's caretaker, has inherited the house and wants to turn it into a bed-and-breakfast. But she is concerned that it's haunted, so she calls in her friend Ruby—who has the gift of extrasensory perception—to check it out. While Ruby is ghost hunting, China Bayles walks into a storm of trouble in nearby Pecan Springs. A half hour before she is to make her nightly deposit, the Pecan Springs bank is robbed and a teller is shot and killed. Before she can discover the identity of the killers, China follows Ruby to the Blackwood house to discuss urgent business. As she is drawn into the mystery of the haunted house, China opens the door on some very real danger...

Book cover of My Beloved World

Book Discussion:
My Beloved World by Sonia Sotomayor

Summary: "An instant American icon--the first Hispanic on the U.S. Supreme Court--tells the story of her life before becoming a judge in an inspiring, surprisingly personal memoir. With startling candor and intimacy, Sonia Sotomayor recounts her life from a Bronx housing project to the federal bench, a progress that is testament to her extraordinary determination and the power of believing in oneself. She writes of her precarious childhood and the refuge she took with her passionately spirited paternal grandmother. She describes her resolve as a young girl to become a lawyer, and how she made this dream become reality: valedictorian of her high school class, summa cum laude at Princeton, Yale Law, prosecutor in the Manhattan D.A.'s office, private practice, federal district judge before the age of forty. She writes about her deeply valued mentors, about her failed marriage, about her cherished family of friends. Through her still-astonished eyes, America's infinite possibilities are envisioned anew in this ... book"-- Provided by publisher.

The Shelby Mustang and Mustang Rally Saturday, April 11, 2015 - 2:00pm

When Ford unveiled the Mustang at the 1964 New York Worlds Fair on April 17, 1964, America fell in love with it.  But many felt there was something lacking: a precision and high performance engine.  Carroll Shelby, who had a company devoted to upgrading standard models into high performance racing cars, took on that task, and unveiled his version in 1965.  Join us as Stephen Tapper, of the Mustang Club of Maryland, discusses the history of the Shelby Mustang.  Following Mr. Tapper’s presentation will be a Mustang Rally in the library’s parking lot.
