Overview
Welcome to Journey Stories, the traveling tales of Americans on the move. The history of transportation in the United States has strong ties to the American frontier spirit and the search for freedom. For example, the European immigrants seeking religious freedom, the expansion to the west in search of gold and economic freedom, and the underground railroad to the North in search of political freedom.
However, all journeys were not voluntary. Native American Indians were forced off their land, with survivors confined to reservations. Africans sold into slavery suffered horrendous conditions on the oceanic voyage, The Middle Passage. Many never made it alive to America’s shores. Still, others came as indentured servants or hired workers who labored under adverse and dangerous conditions upon their arrivals such as the Chinese working on the Pacific Railroad.
The Journey Stories: Our Heritage, Our People Exhibit – brought to you by the Prince George’s Arts & Humanities Council in partnership with the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, the Maryland Humanities Council and the Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibition Service – will be on display in our Oxon Hill Branch, December 7, 2012−January 18, 2013. Again this year, the Library will host the Kids Euro Festival, October 17−November 13, 2012, with its own journey stories to tell. Other renditions on the theme of Journey Stories will be offered in a multiplicity of programs held October 2012 through mid-January 2013. The subcategories include:

Grandma, please tell me a story. How did our family get here? Did we always live in this area? If not, where did we come from and why? If so, how have things changed along the way? Journey Stories: Our Heritage, Our People is a compilation of our stories handed down from generation to generation. Listen to the stories of others that may identify with your own. On your own or in a group, make story quilts with your family’s history, journal the journey, view art exhibits, write memoirs, read literature, share in feasting traditions, check out historical sites and visit your library to learn more about the stories on the journey. Like Us on Facebook and share your own Journey Stories. Tweet about our programs and exhibits using #pgcmlsjourney. Enjoy the journey and the stories! All aboard!

Saturday, Dec. 15, 8 pm
Inspired by the groundbreaking publication, Christmas Gif’: An Anthology of Christmas Poems, Songs, and Stories written by and about African Americans—the first-ever published compilation of African American Christmas traditions, edited by Charlemae Hill Rollins (1963)—Christmas Gift! is a NEWorks original dramatized concert production of old and new yuletide music woven together with stories and selected readings from premiere African American poets, scholars and leaders—including Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Nikki Giovanni.
Conceived and directed by Nolan Williams, Jr., Christmas Gift! is an inspiring holiday production for the entire family featuring musical performances by R&B legend Shirley Murdock, singer/songwriter John Stoddart, and the Voices of Inspiration.
