Collection Highlight: New Books

Lots of new books were published in 2011, and some of our favorite authors and characters are back.  If you're ready to escape the cold and curl up with a fun book, try some of these favorites:

The Bippolo Seed and Other Lost Stories by Dr. Seuss Fans of Dr. Seuss will love these seven stories that were originally published in magazines many years ago.  You'll find The Bippolo Seed; The Rabbit, the Bear, and the Zinniga-Zanniga; Gustav the Goldfish; Tadd and Todd; Steak for Supper; The Strange Shirt Spot; and The Great Henry McBride.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever Middle-schooler Greg Heffley is the prime suspect when it is discovered that school property has been damaged, but when a surprise blizzard hits and school is closed, Greg is stuck indoors with his family, unable to prove his innocence.

Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick Having lost his mother and his hearing in a short time, twelve-year-old Ben leaves his Minnesota home in 1977 to seek the father he never knew in New York City, and meets there Rose, who is also longing for something missing from her life. Ben's story is told in words; Rose's in pictures.

Collection Highlight: Book Review

image of cover of book, Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha LaiThrough a series of poems, a young girl chronicles the life-changing year of 1975, when she, her mother, and her brothers leave Vietnam and resettle in Alabama.

Ha turns 10 in the beginning of the novel, she has a family that loves her and her very own papaya tree growing in her own back yard.  Then when political unrest and violence threaten her home, her family flees on a dreadfully crowded ship headed toward hope.  America is at times heartbreakingly different but sometimes strangely wonderful too.

To read more about Ha's feelings, experiences and new life in America, check out Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai.
