Historic Census Sources At Hyattsville

The Maryland Room does not keep physical copies of census microfilm, but does subscribe to Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest, both of which contain historic census data. These may be found by clicking on the "Online Library" tab of our website, and then by choosing the Information Resources and Research Databases link found there.

1778 Md. Room: 317.52 S; 1778 Census of Maryland. This census was taken in order to determine who had not signed the Oath of Fidelity. Derived from original sources at the Hall of Records, Annapolis. This includes all existing census records for 1778 in Maryland, i.e. Caroline, Charles and Queen Anne's Counties.
1790 Md. Room: 317.52 U; Heads of Families at the First Census: Maryland. Includes both indexing and the full text of census records.

This and some other Federal Census' include valuable explanatory sections on the process of census indexing, irregularities (e.g. a section titled "The Principles of Understanding Census Bloopers...") etc.

1880 Soundex Index on Microfilm. Instructions for using Soundex are found at the Periodicals desk on the first level of the library.
1890 Md. Room: 317.52 D; 1890 Maryland Veterans Census Index. A special census of Civil War Veterans or their widows taken at the same time as the regular population schedules. The census was intended to include only Union Veterans and spouses, but because of the manner in which the census was taken, many Confederates must have been listed by accident.
