Letter from the Director
Letter from the Director
At the moment that we persuade a child, any child,
to cross that threshold, that magic threshold into a library,
we change their lives forever, for the better.
It’s an enormous force for good. – Barack Obama
Welcome our first online-only edition of the Current. Spring is one of the busiest times for our 19 branch libraries as we gear up for our county-wide summer reading programs held from May to August. This year’s programs for Children, Teens and even Adults, are themed around digging deeper and going beneath the surface. Summer Reading Program 2013 promises great books, rich experiences and wonderful incentives for all who participate. Our annual Summer Reading programs are just one way your public library is vital to our educational system here in Prince George’s County.
Our libraries are changing to meet the needs and interests of our customers, including the many who come to create resumes, apply for jobs and seek homework help. We have become more creative in providing services as demand increases while revenues continue to shrink. Prince George’s County libraries offer free electronic materials such as e-books and magazines that can be used on your personal “smart” devices, and continue to communicate with the publishing industry that sees public libraries as economic competition. The library is the one free place for education over a lifetime and when you dig deeper into our library system you will find a rich world of information, literature and entertainment waiting for you both on the shelf and on the web.
