Irish Blessing: A Titanic Centennial Concert of Irish Music and Dance
Bowie Branch
Saturday, June 9, 2 pm

Please join us for an afternoon of Irish music and dance to commemorate the Centennial of the Titanic. When the Titanic sank 100 years ago, it shocked the world. Billed as being practically unsinkable, no one imagined she would sink at all, let alone on her maiden voyage. The Titanic was built in Ireland, by Irish workers, and had many Irish men, women, and children on board when she sank. Irish Blessing, a family musical group, has specially chosen their musical numbers and dances that they will be performing to commemorate these individuals. James (low whistle and bodhran), and Cushla (keyboard and flute) lead this exceptionally talented family ensemble.

James and Cushla’s talented sons Jonathon (flute) and Joshua (fiddle), round out the band. Both Jonathon and Joshua have achieved world championship level status in their Irish step dance pursuits, and both have danced with the Chieftains, Cherish the Ladies, and for Eileen Ivers (of Riverdance fame). Jonathon has placed fifth in the world and won the prestigious North American Senior Belt for the third time, tying the all-time record. He has toured the world with Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance and Magic of the Dance. Joshua is a fiddle phenomenon whose talents are quite stunning. Jonathon and Josh have the rare distinction of qualifying for and competing in the world championships of both music and dance. This will be a performance to remember! Hope to see you there!

One of the most famous maritime disasters took place 100 years ago, and wireless played a central role that dark and cold night on the Atlantic. Had it not been for wireless (using Morse code) or radio, we would have no knowledge of what happened to the Titanic that night.
