Finding a Copy of a Work

Many classic books, poems, and plays are freely available online. There are several large collections to search.

  • Project Gutenberg - official site:
    local Maryland site:
    Around since the 70's, Project Gutenberg is the larges collection of texts online. Search by author or title or just browse through the listings. WARNING: trying to print entire books is not a good idea! Save to disk and read online - or print important passages for future reference.
  • Bartleby.com:
    Bartleby has the full text of many fiction and non-fiction works including the full text of the classics from Harvard Classics Fiction Shelf and various essays and speeches.
  • Poem Finder:

    This is a large collection of poems, short stories, and essays online. Criticism, overviews, and print collections containing the text are also included. If visiting this site from home, you'll need to enter your library card number.
  • An Online Library of Literature:
    Find the full and unabridged texts of classic works of English literature. Fiction from authors like Charles Dickens, the Bronte sisters, Jack London, Mark Twain, and more.
  • Bibliomania:
    Need a book in a hurry?  Here you will find thousands of free e-books, poems, articles, short stories and plays. Includes study guides to many of the most-frequently assigned classics.

Literary Criticism/Work Overviews or Summaries

  • - Literary Criticism Collection - Internet Public Library
    Internet Public Library is the second best place to find literary criticism online (the first is listed above -- Literature Resource Center). You may either browse by title or author. The search tool is somewhat less helpful.
  • Cliff Notes:
    CliffsNotes, those little books with yellow & black covers, are now online.
  • Spark Notes: Literature Study Guides
    Spark Notes provides study guides including context, characters, themes, and chapter summaries for quite a few books.
  • Antistudy - Free Cliff notes and book notes
    Looking for free cliff notes, free book notes, or free book summaries online? Antistudy.com is a search engine for free book notes and literature study guides online.
  • A Critical Reading Guide:
    A college professor provides a “how-to” guide to analyzing literature, particularly poetry and fiction.

About an Author

  • Biography Resource Center
    This is a huge collection of biographies on people of all professions, nationalities, and backgrounds. The easiest way to search is by entering the name in the quick search box and hitting enter. A way to find a person of a specific ethnicity, nationality, or profession is by conducting a "Biographical Facts Search." Once you have the results, the tabs give you different types of articles: narrative (3-5 pages), thumbnail (a paragraph), Who's Who (just the facts), articles, and websites. If visiting this site from home, you'll need to enter your library card number to get in.
  • MasterFILE Premier (EBSCO)
    If visiting this site from home, you'll need to enter your library card number. Click on EBSCOhost Web, then the first choice MasterFILE Premier. Enter the person's name in the search box and the different types of resources available will be listed in the results. Choose Biographies.
