in Microfilm Case I in the Periodicals Room on the first level of
the library) 1790-1930, with the exception of the 1890 census, most
of which was destroyed in or as a result of a fire at the Commerce
Department Building on January 10, 1921.*

special census of Civil War Veterans or their widows taken at
the same time as the regular population schedules. The census
was intended to include only Union Veterans and spouses, but
because of the manner in which the census was taken, many Confederates
must have been listed by accident. |

* Please note: some customers of Hyattsville's Maryland Room materials
have stated that they have been led to some 1890 Maryland Census
records through online resources such as Cyndi's List and Heritage
Quest. This would suggest that someone has located or is attempting
to piece together the lost Census. Try searching for 1870 and 1910
census indexes/records online as well. You might also find online
some incomplete indexing/records for the recently released 1930
Census.
