STEAM: Fizz, Boom, READ! Summer @ Your Library

Bowie, MD ̶ The STEAM: Fizz, Boom, READ! Summer @ Your Library Kickoff at the South Bowie Branch of the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 was a blast! The nine STEAM stations manned by community volunteers conducted experiments in a variety of sciences such as forensics, technology, chemistry and engineering.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Stations:

  • Fingerprinting ̶ Corporal L. Woods from the Prince George’s County Police Crime Scene Investigation Division, along with interns and officers, presented information about how fingerprints are collected and how to analyze them.
  • Blowin’ Gas & Butterfly Explosion ̶ Delores McClain and Velma Blue, members from the Prince George’s County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta and retired teacher Charlotte Brown demonstrated principles of chemistry and chromatography.
  • Floating Around ̶ Hillcrest Heights School Library and retired PGCMLS Librarian, Yvonne Harris provided an explanation of buoyancy at her station.
  • Kitchen Chemistry ̶ Kenneth Clay, Executive Chef at Clyde’s of Gallery Place in DC, taught families about emulsions using oil and vinegar to create salad dressings. Customers enjoyed the salad dressing with a small garden salad.
  • Mini Volcanoes ̶ Dr. Patrice Moss, Professor of Biochemistry at Trinity University presented information about what happens when you combine acids and bases together.
  • 3D Printing ̶ Ken St. Cyr, Solution Architect at Microsoft, brought his 3D printers to the library to show how rolls of filament can be used to create 3D objects. Kids could play with printed chips to build structures.
  • Classroom Jeopardy ̶ Our Jeopardy station was staffed by the Patriot Technology Training Center.
  • Playing with Dirt ̶ Brian Luoma, geotechnical engineer with Geotechnical Laboratories, Inc. created a hands-on activity for kids to learn how soil/dirt can be classified.
  • Child Fingerprint Card ̶ Bowie Police Officers came out and offered parents the opportunity to have their children complete a Child Fingerprint Card or C.O.P.S. (Child Official Personal Safety) form.
The children wrote what they learned and presented their passports for stamping at each station visited. Participants turned in their completed passports and claimed their goody bags. They were filled with Summer @ Your Library calendars and gameboards. Of the 232 attendees, 138 registered for PGCMLS' 2014 Summer @ Your Library program. Thanks to the Friends of the South Bowie Library, community and teen volunteers and staff for making the Summer @ Your Library Kickoff an event to remember.
