Library System to be Presented County Committee on the War of 1812

Contribution at Marlborough Day 2014

Hyattsville, MD — The Prince George’s County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) will be honored by the Prince George’s County Committee on the War of 1812 at Marlborough Day 2014 on Saturday, May 10 at 12:30 pm on the Main Street platform. The War of 1812 Committee will present the Library with book donations, totaling approximately $275, plus a monetary award to purchase items related to the War of 1812. A super-sized $300 check will be presented to PGCMLS. Accepting the contributions on behalf of the Library and the Board of Library Trustees will be Library Director Kathleen A. Teaze and Area Manager Luis Labra.

Book donations include:

·       Through the Perilous Fight: Six Weeks That Saved the Nationby Steve Vogel (5 copies)

·       Chesapeake Legends and Lore from the War of 1812by Ralph Eshelman and Scott Sheads (5 copies)

·       The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War in Virginia, 1772-1832 by Alan Taylor (3 copies of this Pulitzer Prize winning book)

·       In Full Glory Reflected: Discovering the War of 1812 in the Chesapeake by Ralph Eshelman and Burton Kummerow (1 copy, includes a great travel guide section)

This War of 1812 presentation is one of many events leading up to the celebration of the Battle of Bladensburg 200th Anniversary on August 23, 2014. Without Prince George’s County, and the Battle of Bladensburg, the Star Spangled Banner and the victory at Baltimore would not have occurred in the War of 1812. About the Prince George’s County Committee on the War of 1812

The Prince George’s County Committee on the War of 1812 was established in 2012 to support the work of the Battle of Bladensburg Task Force, which has been preparing for the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812 in Bladensburg. The County Committee includes leaders, historians and supporters from around the County that are helping to coordinate the publicity of the activities during the summer of 2014. This group has been involved in the local History Day program, development of visitor centers, creation of educational programs and exhibits, and a variety of local level event productions. Led by Beatrice Tignor from the County Executive’s office and Aaron Marcavitch of Anacostia Trails Heritage Area, this group meets bi-monthly.
