Employment Opportunity Announcement

Our System is looking for a librarian with supervisory experience, the dedication to provide high quality customer service in a generalist branch, and outstanding organizational skills.  This librarian will provide quality customer service in circulation and information functions at our Accokeek, Maryland branch.  If you are interested in making a real difference at a community library, this is the position for you.  We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including credit for time spent at other public libraries when calculating annual leave accrual and sick leave transfer, under certain circumstances (see the benefits on our website).  And we offer exceptional training opportunities for staff throughout their entire career with the Library.  Individuals that have applied in the past six (6) months may not reapply.

Position Title: Librarian II

Location:
Accokeek Branch, 15773 Livingston Road, Accokeek, Maryland

Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week). All schedules include a combination of daytime, evening and Saturday hours.

Salary: $43,583 and a generous benefits package

Examples of Duties: Plans, organizes, coordinates and supervises the work of the Circulation Department; performs circulation duties.  Supervises disposition of all money in the Circulation Department. Provides quality reference and readers' advisory services.  Participates in the selection, development, evaluation, and maintenance of materials to meet community information and recreation requirements; reads and reviews materials and identifies replacement needs. Trains, supervises and evaluates staff in supervisory line. Plans and presents programs and book talks for schools, community agencies and other groups; plans and arranges displays and exhibits. Compiles bibliographies; maintains files and indexes.  Works in various branches other than where regularly assigned. Collects, maintains and evaluates statistics.  Keeps informed of professional developments in library service. Attends professional meetings, workshops and conferences and serves on committees.  Assumes the duties of a senior staff member upon request.  Initiates and maintains local community contacts. Performs other duties or responsibilities that are related to the position.

Qualifications/Requirements: Possession of a Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program and two (2) years of professional library experience; previous supervisory experience.  Knowledge of characteristics of the service area assigned and customer interests and needs in all age groups.  Knowledge of community organizations, agencies and resources.  Skill in program development and delivery.  Knowledge of circulation functions.  Ability to effectively supervise, including planning, scheduling, training and evaluating staff.  Demonstrated ability to deal tactfully and efficiently with a diverse public, community organizations and staff.  Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment, and meet deadlines. Work involves extensive standing; walking; reaching, stooping, bending, grasping and moving objects; and use of computer, telephone and other office equipment.

Necessary Special Requirement: Maryland Professional Public Librarian Certification within 90 days of hire
