The Prince George’s County Memorial Library System is participating in Focus the Nation, a national teach-in on global warming solutions. In the next few years, as a nation, we must seek critical global warming solutions. Our decisions will have an enormous impact on our children’s lives. Climate Change: The Effect of Human Activity
Tuesday, January 29 7 pm Hyattsville Branch
Join us as research scientist Ross J. Salawitch discusses how human activities are affecting the atmospheric abundance of carbon dioxide, the most important driver of climate change. After reviewing past climate change and the impacts of future climate change, Salawitch will address some of the uncertainties inherent in projecting the future state of a system as complex as Earth's climate. To bring things home, Salawitch will explore the implications of climate change for Maryland and some of society’s options to reduce the impacts of climate change. This talk draws on work by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which, along with Al Gore, was recently awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Salawitch is an atmospheric chemist at the University of Maryland.
2% Solution Webcast
Wednesday, January 30 7 pm Accokeek Branch
To hold global warming at the low-end, 3-4°F, requires developed countries to cut global warming pollution by more than 80% below current levels by 2050. Put another way, we need to cut roughly 2% of current emission levels each year for the next forty years. This webcast will revolve around the question: can we as a nation get on this path and cut global warming pollution 2% a year for the next decade? If so, what would it take? Panelists include Stanford climate scientist Steve Schneider, Natural Capitalism and environmental justice leader Hunter Lovins and Van Jones, executive director of the Ella Baker Center in Oakland, California. Co-produced by the National Wildlife Federation and aired by the Earth Day Network.
Home Energy Audits: Save Money by Going Green
Tuesday, February 5 7 pm Laurel Branch
Learn how to make your home more comfortable, healthy and energy efficient. Home energy audits identify the hidden energy leaks that cause high-energy bills. Inspectors trained in building sciences use diagnostic tools, such as a blower door and an infrared thermal camera, to collect the necessary data on your home’s energy performance. The inspection report suggests customized and prioritized recommendations which will reduce energy costs while improving comfort. Presented by Frank Lee and Peter Van Buren of TerraLogos Green Home Services.
