APRIL 2017
Message from the CEO

Celebrate National Library Week, April 9-15 with us! This year's theme is Libraries Transform. The Local Strength program for teens at our Hillcrest Heights Branch illustrates one way in which the Library is positively impacting area teens and their communities.

Local Strength

PGCMLS staff member Jamyel Jenifer, Founder of Local Strength, has this to say about the program.

Teens in Local Strength are not just talk; they are all about taking action. Currently, members are in the process of learning how to code in HTML. In a few months, they will be able to create a website for a local domestic violence nonprofit. The teens are also in the process of writing a grant to implement an awareness campaign to combat youth homelessness.

Upcoming events include: CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) training, HIV/AIDS (human immunodeficiency virus / acquired immune deficiency syndrome) discussion and a session on education with Aaron Gilchrist from NBC 4 News. Also, the Prince George’s County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO and PGCMLS management staff will address the teens with respect to business plan development. Jenifer plans to add a second weekly meeting date for Local Strength members in response to their demand. More

We are educating teens to engage with their communities and enrich their lives and those they serve.

Enrich, Engage, Educate!
